ALASKAN MALAMUTESHistory One of the oldest artic sled dogs, is the Alaskan Malamute. Although the origin of the Alaskan Malamute is not clearly known, it is generally considered to be a descendant of the Mahlemut dog. An ancient Inuit tribe, the Mahlemut were the native people of Norton Sound, an inlet on the northwest coast of Alaska. The Alaskan Malamutes are powerful and substantially built dogs with deep chests and strong, compact bodies, perfect for surviving in Alaskan Temperatures and pulling heavy loads. The Alaskan Malamutes are able to pull a tremendous amount of weight over long distances at a steady pace. In 1896, the Gold Rush created a high demand for these dogs. The American Kennel Club officially recognized the Alaskan Malamute in 1935. |
